Upton Votes To Raise Taxes on 32 Million Middle-Class Families
GOP House Passes Tax Scam Packed with Giveaways for Corporations, Big Money Special Interests

LANSING — Congressman Fred Upton (R-St. Joseph) voted for the GOP tax plan today that will raise taxes on 32 million middle-class families. More than 23 million of those families would see a tax increase of over $500 per year. But as middle-class families are bludgeoned in their plan, Republicans included almost a half-trillion dollars in tax giveaways to wealthy corporations and the wealthiest 1%. The plan also cuts funding for Medicare, Medicaid, and education.

“Millions of middle-class families will pay more under this Republican tax scam, but did that make a difference to Fred Upton? Fred Upton went against Michigan families today when he voted to raise taxes on working people to pay for even more giveaways for wealthy corporations and big money special interests. More than 23 million families will be paying an additional $500 or more in taxes every year under this plan, all so corporations can get a half-trillion dollars in tax breaks they don’t need and won’t use to create jobs. Middle-class families in Michigan won’t forget Fred Upton’s vote when they head to the polls in 2018,” said Brandon Dillon, Michigan Democratic Party Chair.

It’s no surprise Upton supports a tax plan that sides with corporations and the wealthiest 1% of taxpayers over the middle-class. Earlier this year, Upton was the architect behind the House Republican health care repeal that would have caused health care and prescription drug costs to skyrocket for millions of middle-class families and caused millions more to lose health care altogether.
